Adolescent sexual health education is a critical component of public health, as it equips young people with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their sexual health. Pediatric nurses are well-positioned to contribute to adolescent sexual health education, especially in settings where healthcare services may be lacking or where cultural barriers prevent open discussion of sexual health (Kadir et al., 2023). In Kebbi State, like in many parts of Nigeria, there is a lack of comprehensive sexual health education programs for adolescents, leading to issues such as early pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unsafe sexual practices among young people (Suleiman & Gana, 2024).
Pediatric nurses, as trusted healthcare providers, can play a significant role in providing sexual health education, promoting safe sexual practices, and advocating for policy changes. However, the extent to which nurses are engaged in this aspect of care in Kebbi State has not been thoroughly explored. This study seeks to examine the role of pediatric nurses in delivering adolescent sexual health education and identify the barriers and opportunities for improvement in this area.
There is a gap in adolescent sexual health education in Kebbi State, particularly in rural areas where cultural beliefs and stigma limit discussions about sexual health. Pediatric nurses can contribute significantly to this area, but their involvement in sexual health education is not well documented. Understanding their role and challenges is vital for improving adolescent sexual health outcomes in the state.
The study will focus on pediatric nurses working in both urban and rural areas of Kebbi State. Data will be collected through interviews and surveys. Limitations include possible resistance from participants due to cultural sensitivities and potential bias in self-reported data.
